Alethea Gaarden B.A., MA
Alethea Gaarden graduated from Mercyhurst University in 2014 with a double major in English and Political Science. She began sailing the summer before her senior year. After completing her graduate degree at Ohio University, she came back to Erie to spend one summer working for the brig Niagara as a deckhand and shipwright's apprentice. That “one summer” turned into a year, and then two, and then three. In 2019, she finally left the Niagara to teach at Mercyhurst, where she currently works full-time for the English department. In May 2023, she'll accompany a group of current Mercyhurst students for a joint history and writing program aboard the Niagara. She can't wait to be back on the water.Topic:

Women on the Waves

Her lecture, “Women on the Waves,” is one deckhand's perspective on the importance of tall ship sailing in the 21st century, even—and maybe especially—for people who don't think of themselves as sailors, athletes, or adventurers.
